Picking the Pen Back Up: The Beginning of Legacy Out Loud

We Build Louder. We Educate Louder. We Legacy Louder.
Some families pass down recipes.
Our family passes down handwritten legacies, notes full of love, and the power of the pen.
Welcome to Legacy Out Loud, where our family doesn’t just lead… we legacy.
Let me paint the picture for you. We’re the Evans Family, a Philadelphia-rooted crew of educators, artists, thinkers, doers, and dreamers. Together, we make up The Evans Leadership and Arts Collaborative, a family business built on our shared calling to lead with purpose, educate with passion, and create with heart. Whether it’s in a classroom, on a stage, behind a mic, or around a dinner table, we believe that leadership and legacy go hand-in-hand.
There’s me, Dr. Tamika Michelle, wife, mom, CEO, proud North Philly girl, lifelong educator, and a writer trying to rediscover her rhythm. My husband, Dr. Alphonso Evans Sr., is a fellow educator, author, speaker, and leadership coach who has dedicated his life to mentoring Black men and shaping systems that empower.
Our daughter, Jordyn Michelle, is the quiet storm, and the real boss of the family. She’s brilliant, athletic, introverted, deeply observant, and full of purpose. Don’t let her calm demeanor fool you, she sees everything, misses nothing and processes it all, while leading with quiet confidence. And our son, Alphonso Jr., is the heart-meets-hustle of the bunch, a business-minded fine arts major and vocal artist whose voice has the power to move people both through music and service. Respectful, charismatic, grounded, and deeply rooted in purpose, AJ takes up the space in every room he enters… and for good reason.
Together, we’ve built a life rooted in service, shaped by creativity, and anchored in faith. Trust me, we’re just getting started.
Why a blog, and why now?
Six years ago, I launched a blog called Cultivating Greatness. It was my love letter to life. It was full of lessons, reflections, and the joy I felt during that season of life. But somewhere between trying to balance motherhood, leadership, meetings, and everything in between… writing and so many other things fell off the to-do list. I blinked, and time ran away with my words.
Then, during one of the hardest seasons of my life, I lost my Gram, our GG, my joy, my love, and my greatest inspiration. She was the blueprint: wise, funny, thoughtful, intentional, giving, stylish, and always writing something down. After her passing, we found boxes filled with letters, notes, journal entries, even lists of scriptures and sayings she wanted us to carry with us. It was as if she was still speaking and still guiding us. Her pen was her voice long before she ever lost it. And in her final years, when her spoken words faded, the pen became her only way to communicate. To some, a pen is just a simple tool, but in Esther’s hands, it became a legacy, inked with wisdom, love, and the stories she needed us not to forget. I realize now, it wasn’t just paper and ink. It was her handwritten legacy, left intentionally for us to hold, read, and remember.
After being the one in the family who read every letter, not just once, but over and over again, I knew deep down that I couldn’t just hold her words. I had to honor them. I had to be the one to pick up the pen and continue what she started.
My love for words, books, and storytelling is rooted in her influence. And in a world filled with noise that often distracts, divides, or discourages, I feel called to offer something different, something that builds louder, educates louder, and legacies louder… in all the right ways. In Her Ink… I Found My Voice

So, what is Legacy Out Loud?
It’s a blog.
It’s a love letter.
It’s our family’s digital front porch.
It’s where we’ll share the heart work behind our hard work, the stories that shape us, the values that ground us, the laughs that keep us, and the lessons we’re still continuing to learn. You can expect a mix of reflections, real talk, leadership gems, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of how we’re trying to leave the world better than we found it.
Because around here…
We Build Louder. We’ve created businesses, programs, and spaces that center Black excellence.
We Educate Louder. We’ve taught, mentored, traveled, and challenged systems that weren’t built for us.
We Legacy Louder. We’re raising and influencing children who will ensure our impact echoes beyond our time, not quietly, but boldly, loudly, and unapologetically.
This is our story.
Our contribution.
Our legacy, written out loud.
In Ink, Legacy, and Love,
Dr. Tamika Michelle
