In This House, Legacy Is Everything
“What’s your last name?”
It sounds like a simple question, one that most people could answer without a second thought. But in our house, that question carries weight. It carries identity. It carries expectation. It carries legacy.
Before I married Alphonso, I was Tamika Michelle Roberts, proud of my roots, proud of my people, proud to be a Roberts. But when I became an Evans, I stepped into more than a new name. I stepped into a new calling. A new covenant. A new legacy. I didn’t fully grasp what that meant back in 2004 when we first said, “I do,” but two decades later, I understand it deeply. I didn’t just marry a man; I married into purpose.
Alphonso Evans Sr. is driven, disciplined, and unwavering in his faith. While we are opposites in soooo many ways, what captured my heart wasn’t his charm or charisma, though he had a lot of it in 2001 😄, it was his clarity. His calling. His commitment to greatness, and more importantly, to legacy.
From the very beginning, he shared his vision with bold clarity. He was unapologetic, unwavering, and rooted in one purpose: Making his grandparents proud. I had never met a 19-year-old more sure of his future. While most young men his age were still figuring things out, he was already mapping out his path.
He told me, plainly and confidently, that he would become a teacher, then a principal, and ultimately a district leader, with a doctorate in hand. And he didn’t just speak those goals he moved on them. Every step he took was intentional, and even when the road got long, he never lost sight of where he was going.
I’ll never forget the moment he felt disappointed for earning his doctorate degree at 41 instead of 40 years old because that’s the age he had declared he would have it by. Meanwhile, I was celebrating the victory, but he was reflecting on the precision of the promise he made to himself. That’s Alphonso… driven beyond measure, faithful to his word, and relentless in his pursuit of purpose.
That kind of vision is rare. That kind of discipline is rare. And it’s what drew me to him then, and what gave my parents the confidence to entrust me to his covering as my husband.

That same level of intentionality is now being passed down to our children.
Since our children were old enough to understand, Alphonso would send them out the house every morning and ask, “What’s your last name?” And when they responded, “Evans” he would remind them to carry that name with pride.
When they make mistakes, he asks again.
When they doubt themselves or face disappointments, he asks them again.
When they excel, he affirms them with the same reminder.
When the world tells them who to be, what they can do, or how they should act, he reminds them: You’re an Evans. And in this house, that means something!
At Legacy Out Loud, that’s what we believe in, building intentional legacy, not by accident but by design. Being an Evans means trusting in God first, striving for excellence, embracing service, walking in purpose, and understanding that mediocrity is not our birthright. In this house, legacy lives in every conversation, every correction, every celebration.
Our goal isn’t just to raise children, our goal is to do this Legacy thing OUT LOUD and that takes work. Legacy doesn’t build itself. It must be taught, nurtured, and protected. It must be spoken aloud and passed down like sacred scripture. That’s why at Legacy Out Loud, we don’t just lead, we legacy.
Here are a few values that serve as our family’s compass. They aren’t just rules, they’re reflections of the legacy we are committed to leaving behind. Our children may get tired of hearing them, but they’ll never forget them:
The Evans Family Legacy Principles
(aka “What Daddy Says” … and what Mommy reinforces 😄)
1. Seek, Serve, and Honor God in All That You Do
“As for me and my house…” Enough said.
2. Love Yourself
Your worth doesn’t need to be validated by others. You set the standard.
3. Love Your Family Fiercely
Family is forever. Period. Protect it. Prioritize it. Preserve it.
4. Give Back Generously
You are blessed to be a blessing. Keep your hands open to give and to receive.
5. No Excuses, Ever
Excuses build nothing. Legacy builders show up, even when it’s hard.
6. Plant Good Seeds… Because Reaping Season Always Comes Around
You reap what you sow, so sow in service, sow in kindness, sow in excellence.
7. Use Your Voice
Your voice has power. Speak up, speak truth, and always listen well.
8. Don’t Let Grass Grow Under Your Feet
Tomorrow is not promised… Act now, don’t waste time, and don’t delay your greatness
9. Dream Big. Then Dream Bigger
If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small.
10. We Take No Shorts
The biggest risk is when you don’t take one; therefore, give it all you have and take no shorts in this life…
11. Never Give Up
Difficulty on the way to victory is the opportunity to watch God work
12. Mediocrity Has No Home Here
The price of excellence is discipline, and the cost of mediocrity is disappointment. Good enough is never good enough if it is not your personal best
13. Never Say “I Can’t”
Always remember that you are in your “Year of Yet” It’s never that you can’t, its always that you just haven’t YET. Where you fall short, always remember God will make up the difference
14. It’s okay to make mistakes, learn from them
Fail fast. Learn faster. Grow wiser. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not taking risks, and that means you’re not going anywhere. The key is to make mistakes faster than your competition, so you have more chances to learn, grow and win from the lessons learned through your mistakes.
15. Set Goals and Go Get Them
Legacy is built with intention, prayer, planning, and persistence. Great Lives are not attained by happenstance they are achieved through prayer, goal setting, hard work and follow-through
16. Early Is On Time. On Time Is Late. And Late Is Unacceptable.
And yes… we’re still working on Daddy with this one, because if you know Alphonso Sr. you know he has a true illness in this area. 😅
17. Gratitude Is a Daily Practice… We are Blessed, be Grateful
Never forget how blessed you are. Say “thank you” with your words and your life. It’s nothing worse than an ungrateful person. God is and has been better than good to us and our family and therefore at all times you must be grateful recognizing that things could be different.
18. Be Courteous, Kind, and Forgiving
These qualities will carry you further than talent ever could. These attributes will be crucial throughout your entire life. Always remember that being courteous and kind can change an atmosphere and that forgiving others is more about you then the person you have to extend forgiveness toward.
19. Finish Strong
We don’t just show up, we show out. Start strong but finish stronger.
20. Be Confident, Not Arrogant
You are Black brilliance and divine greatness, walk in it and take up the space in every room you enter, but never lose your humility
Ready to Live Your Legacy Out Loud?
At Legacy Out Loud, we believe that legacies aren’t left by accident. They’re built one lesson, one value, one conversation at a time. We don’t just raise children. We raise legacy-bearers. And we’re proud to say: in this house, our last name means everything. Before we brand a business, we must first brand our family legacy.
So, here’s the charge:
Gather your family. Sit around the table. Start the conversation.
Ask the questions that matter. Define what your last name stands for. Speak your values out loud and put them into practice daily.
Questions to help the conversation:
• What’s most important to us as a family?
• What values do we want to instill and embody?
• What sayings, scriptures, or mantras define our family culture?
• How do we want our children to carry our name, and our legacy into the world?
Let this be more than a reflection, let it be your family’s blueprint. Your declaration. Your Legacy Out Loud.
